The Secretary of Defense position has always intrigued me. Not only do you have to run the largest government organization (over three million employees) with an astronomical budget ($500 billion plus) but you have to change that organization on the fly to the new challenges that groups like ISIS present.
Current Secretary of Defense Ash Carter is an interesting choice for the role. While there weren’t a lot of candidates due to the President’s micro managing style, Carter stepped up anyway. Carter hasan Oxford degree in Theoretical Physics which tells us that he may look at an issues differently than say his predecessor Chuck Hagel.
The jury is still out but it will be interesting to see what kind of changes he makes during his time there and if he convince the President to do more in places like Syria.
